Dr. Shah, what skin care methods should women be using when they’re in their 20’s? What can be done to refresh skin and prevent early signs of aging?

When you’re in your 20’s, your goal is to preserve and protect as much as possible in order for you to have to make less adjusts during your later years. Many many MANY things can weaken the skin during your 20’s: partying too much, pulling all-nighters, forgetting to wash makeup off.
Start with this regiment AND KEEP TO IT-

Cleanse:  Choose a gentle cleanser than can remove your makeup and any dirt or excess oil but that doesn’t dry out your skin.  Use in the morning and at night to wash the face. Try: Cerave Hydrating Cleanser ($10).

Moisturize: Pick a lightweight moisturizer that contains a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Wearing sunscreen daily throughout the year is one of the most important things you can add to your skin care regimen to minimize skin aging and reduce skin cancer risk. Try: EltaMD UV Clear ($30).

Protect Yourself: Add in an antioxidant serum. This is applied underneath your moisturizer. Try: Skinceuticals CE Ferulic ($60).

What about women that are in their 30’s and 40’s?

Skin is getting weaker at this age and it wasn’t what it used to be, which makes puffiness more prominent. This is  the time to strengthen the skin with a morning peptide serum under SPF to build firming collagen, as well as an eye cream that contains caffeine. At night you can introduce a retinol product to promote collagen production.

What about women in their 50’s +??

Moisturizing is key at this time in life, so add in thicker products while still maintaining anti-aging ingredients. Switch to a creamy cleanser or a cleansing oil, and use thicker day and night moisturizers if you need more hydration. Also add in products which provide a bit of lift and skin firming. Try: Revision Nectifirm and Revision Firming Night Treatment.
